"Destroy Babylon make a return to vinyl with their third LP Long Live the Vortex. The band draw freely on reggae from ska to rockers with a musical sophistication that confirms an American origin. Some of the musicians also play with the like of John Brown's Body, one of the top US reggae acts.
The first tune 'DB Inc.' is a tongue in cheek reflection on life and business, reasoning that there's no need to slave for the system when we can all be businesses. That theme develops throughout this album, with intelligent lyrics and well, lots of good songs. This doesn't lean to rock as much as most American reggae but the album is spiced with lots of good playing, sparse licks of guitar and sax, a lick of country psychedelica and the occasional touch of funk or Mexicana.
Some of the tunes, such as 'Mr Money Bags', are beautifully realized slices of pop that recall the best of English new wave of the Eighties. Close your eyes listening to this album and you can imagine what Led Zepellin might have sounded like if they started playing reggae. The standout tracks for me are 'Freeze', inspired by the Roots Radics, and the final track 'Daze of No Future Passed', a sweet piece of roots music and a lyric that defies the 'no future' philosophy and gently calls to Americans that there is a future in this no future world.
From Boston, Massachusetts, and drawing their name from a Bad Brains tune, Destroy Babylon started under the influence of punk and reggae and their music retains this energy. The LP is on vinyl and CD and the CD comes with an oversized lyrics book in the DIY style. Ten tunes in total."
